O.J. Simpson as the new ambassador to Saudi Arabia? Why not. It has to be better than eating out of dumpsters.

To hear John Lennon opine about world peace in the 60's and 70's while he was ripped on acid, pot, and whatever else was I'm sure inspiring in its time (and novel for a rock star to be this socially conscious), but I think we've learned our lesson. We pay our governments and academics serious cash to grapple with the complexities of domestic and world politics, so when I hear about Bono's world debt relief tour, Eminem's views on fatherhood, or Raymond Riley blather on about the merits of communism, I'm left to wonder why we have so much difficulty finding intelligent pop stars with something to say. They are out there (e.g. Pete Townshend, Bruce Cockburn, David Bowie).

Poor, senile Chomsky. I guess it is better to burn out than just fade away. Give this bozo another couple of years at the pulpit and he'll start rambling like Arafat.

I was going to write a response to the National Post's insufferable windbag Mark Kingwell for his application into the idiotarian movement yesterday, but alas, the National Post's Clifford Orwin beat me to it.

(I was about to provide a link to Kingwell's demonstration of pedantic moral lunacy but it seems the piece has been removed altogether from the National Post's website - odd considering they archive at least a half dozen columns from each of their columnists. Even more curious is the paper's founder, Conrad Black, has weighed in today with an article of his own and although he stays away from the Isreal-Palestine debate, his moral clarity suggests he might not have been too happy with what was written in his paper yesterday. Did he simply remove Kingwell's article from the website? They don't call him Lord for nothing.)

Canadian (un)politics

A sorry state for a sorry state...

Margaret Wente (Globe and Mail) - Where is the man with the briefcase?
Greg Weston (Sun Ottawa Bureau) - Grade A execution
Douglas Fisher (Sun Ottawa Bureau) - Bring on Martin ... the sooner the better
Paul Stanway (Edmonton Sun) - Chretien is trying to save his leadership
Jim Travers (Toronto Star) - Time running out for scrappy PM

For a G-8 nation, the last few years have been pretty sad.

America at War?

Mark Steyn (National Post) - This isn't war but 'politics as usual'
John Derbyshire (National Review) - The U.S. Will Not Go to War Against Iraq

I'm curious to know how similar post 9/11 events (societal moods, domestic politics, foreign policy, etc) look to the events that followed Pearl Harbor. If Iraq and Saudi Arabia are to be delivered the same fate as Germany and Japan (which will be necessary if anything is to be 'won'), truly significant actions might be a few years in the making. How many can recite famous events that precipitated in the immediate year after the Confederates attacked Fort Sumter? the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand? the Blitzkrieg marching into Poland? Me neither.

For my first posting I would like to thank Glenn Reynolds (of instapundit.com fame - and I do mean fame) for the inspiration. Long live the blogosphere.
